    Fall Member Meeting

It was great to see so many members, both new and old, during our first in-person meeting of the fall. We hope that everyone had a great summer, was able to take some time off to refuel, and is excited about the new academic year. Here are the most important topics covered in our meeting. We discussed continuing the virtual International Film Club events. We are looking for  members to join the Committee to help select the movie for the month through Kanopy, plan the group discussion date, set up and send out the Zoom meeting to the group, and moderate the discussion. We also considered other options for in-person…

    Craft & Chat

It’s hard to believe it is already December! This is a time to get cozy and there is nothing better than sit together and have some fun. This is what IEGAP members decided to do on a Wednesday afternoon. We came for an hour of cookies, coffee and some serious crafting. It was so great to see people meeting in person again and having fun making a macramé.

    2021 Tiger Trot

Many ERG members participated in this year Tiger Trot. It was a chance to support a great cause and reconnect with campus colleagues. There was an ERG stand where you could get a donut, a hot cider or chocolate after a 5k run or walk. Thanks to the organizers for the wonderful event!

Next International Film Club on 10/20

Please join us for the next meeting for the film club. Film title: Leona (Mexico 2018) Synopsis:An intimate, insightful, and moving film that tells the story of a young Jewish woman from Mexico City who finds herself torn between her family and her forbidden love. Ripe with all the drama and interpersonal conflicts of a Jane Austen novel, watching her negotiate the labyrinth of familial pressure, religious precedent, and her own burgeoning sentiment is both painful and beautiful – there are no easy choices to be made. Free and available online at Kanopyhttps://catalog.princeton.edu/catalog/11704283 (PUID required) Watch the trailer: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8446886/ We look forward to seeing there!

    Virtual IEGAP International Film Club

We are pleased to write to you with a film selection and date for conversation for the inaugural International Film Club meeting.  Instead of adding a new date to our already busy schedules, we suggest that we use one of our Friday get-togethers to discuss the film. It requires a PUID and Duo authentication.  Film title: Sweet Bean (2015, Japanese) https://catalog.princeton.edu/catalog/11125062 Synopsis: The manager of a pancake stall finds himself confronted with an odd but sympathetic elderly woman looking for work. Passing of Hanna Hand

Hanna passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 27 2020, in part due to complications from COVID-19. Hanna was a longtime volunteer for the international students and scholars with Davis International Centers. She was also a dear member of IEGAP – always smiling and so elegant. Hanna had an infectious joie de vivre. She used to come to our lunch meetings and was also often going to Princeton Garden Theatre watching movies that were part of the International Cinema Series.  She was from Germany and as far as I remember she was always before or after her travel to Europe. Her family lived in Hesse region (the area of Frankfurt am…

    IEGAP volunteers at ReStore

Last Saturday 7 volunteers from IEGAP got up early to volunteer at new Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Hamilton, NJ. They were asked to sand off the walls which turned out to be a quite tiring task. Nevertheless everyone had great time, there was a lot of laughter and everyone agreed that we should repeat it again. Thanks to Patricia for organizing this wonderful event! And thanks to Vesna, Karen, Patricia, Lena, Georgia, Alicja and Marc-André for all the hard work! Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home.  Habitat ReStores are independently owned reuse stores operated by local Habitat for Humanity…

Lunch and Language – El Día de Los Muertos

On a beautiful fall day, our friends from Latino Princetonians – Lisa M. Linn de Barona and Oscar Torres-Reyes – enabled us to experience El Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) as it is celebrated in Mexico and other South American cultures on November 1st and 2nd. They even built an ofrenda (altar) to honor the dead (some IEGAP members brought the photos of their deceased loved ones). The celebrations developed from pre-Columbian cultures (the Aztecs, the Mayans, the Olmecs), today this holiday is celebrated by families and friends gathering together. This tradition is currently part of Intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. We learned who La Catrina is, what…

    Jackie Leighton’s Farewell Lunch

On Tuesday, September 24th we gathered to thank Jackie Leighton for her dedicated support to IEGAP. Jackie Leighton, the director of Davis International Center, was our first Executive Sponsor. She retired last Monday after almost a decade at Princeton University. IEGAP members had a chance to have a lunch and talk with Jackie about her work and her future plans. The biggest surprise was a small concert of Roman (a talented musician from Siberia) who was invited by our fellow member – Iulia. Here are few photos from this event:
